The Mayfield-Gutsch Estate, formerly known as Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve, is a privately owned historic estate, gardens, and natural preserve on a cliff overlooking Lake Travis in southwest Austin, Texas. It was originally built in the 1890s, purchased by the former state governor, Allison Mayfield, in 1908. In addition to his ranch, he and his wife were instrumental in the establishment of numerous other Austin properties. The land was used as a park for the community and became home to several historical buildings. The land that the Mayfield-Gutsch Estate covers was originally part of an old estate of James H. Mayfield, who owned it from 1866 to his death. At one time, it was the site of a town called Mayville, which was near Austin at the time of its formation. The area was not developed until the 1890s when the land was purchased by Allison Mayfield, a former state senator, and the Texas Railroad Commission member. His ranch was one of the first subdivisions to be constructed on the land. His ranch became part of the development when his neighbor’s property was built around it. His neighbor’s property was later torn down and replaced with the original ranch of the estate. Today, the Mayfield-Gutsch Estate is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Austin and is home to some of the most distinguished residents of the city. The neighborhood is the subject of numerous Austin Monthly, Austin Community Magazine, and Austin Business Journal stories, as well as being featured in national publications. The neighborhood is also home to several notable Austin restaurants, including Pappasito’s BBQ in Westlake, the restaurant of choice for many prominent residents of the City of Austin.
